A TRIBUTE TO FAIZAH ABDULLAH

It is nearly 3 years since I met this wonderful young woman. Faizah was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004 whilst she was pregnant. She was only 20 years old. She had a mastectomy and 3 cycles of chemotherapy whilst she was pregnant and after delivering the most beautiful baby girl she finished her treatment. This is when Nurse Toh in Kuala Terengganu introduced her to me. I fitted her with her breast prosthesis and mastectomy bra and she was thrilled. Faizah battled her cancer but unfortunately it returned in her other breast and she had a second mastectomy. Once again I gave her another prosthesis and bra.

I met her again last December when Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital held a breast cancer awareness event for 2 days. Faizah spoke bravely to the audience about her struggle and how she now faced lung and bone cancer.

Last week Faizah went to a place of peace. She was beautiful and I will miss her warm gentle face when I go to Kuala Terengganu. I wish her family but especially her husband and her daughter the strength to move forward.

In honour of Faizah, Amanita will provide RM500 annually to further the education of nurses in breast cancer care

BREAST CANCER
I have spent the last few weeks traveling in Malaysia. I have visited Kuala Terengganu, Kota Bahru and Penang. I really enjoy spending time with breast cancer survivors and the wonderful nurses that look after them.

NEW PARTNERSHIP IN KOTA BAHRU
As promised, I wish to announce that we have partnered The Family Planning Association of Kota Bahru. They will be fitting breast prostheses and mastectomy wear for Amanita. They will also have wigs, scarves and turbans. FPA have a perfect fitting room and we look forward to a long an excellent relationship. COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Whilst I was in Kota Bahru  I conducted a “Communication Skills” workshop for breast cancer survivors to assist them when they visit newly diagnosed ladies in hospital. Check out my list of tips for good listening
FITTINGS IN KUALA TERENGGANU

Amanita, Sultanah Nur Hospital and the Welfare department have collaborated to assist women in KT with breast cancer. I spent two wonderful days with Staff Nurse Toh and her colleagues

BREAST HEALTH INFORMATION SESSION
Amanita and Prince Court will be co hosting a talk on 10th April at Prince Court Medical Centre, about breast health and the importance of early detection. This talk will be presented by Dr Harjit Kaur, the Consultant Breast and Endocrine Surgeon who specialises in oncoplastics. Information will be forwarded to you soon about this extremely interesting session which will also give you the opportunity to visit KL’s newest hospital located off Jalan Tun Razak.

EXPATRIATE CANCER SUPPORT GROUP

About 30 ladies listened to Dr Somasundaram and Dr Faizal about what could be done to arrest the ageing process and sculpt that ever changing body that we are faced with as we get older. Dee also demonstrated how to do self massage to reduce the risk of lymphoedema. As always we were fed extremely well with lots of delicious home cooked food. We are looking forward to our next visit to pick up some more of those excellent caramelised bananas!" view gallery
